New Faculty Teaching Academy

All faculty new to teaching at UCI are invited to participate in the New Faculty Teaching Academy (NFTA).  The 2017 Academy will take place on August 29th, 30th, and 31st in Social Ecology I: 101. Register at https://eee.uci.edu/survey/32gK50EAUG.

Designed as a series of integrated modules, participants can sign-up for the number of modules that they feel will best suit their needs.

The Academy is designed specifically for new professors with limited teaching experience; however, new faculty with more experience who are still interested are more than welcome to participate.

Co-sponsored by the Office of Academic Personnel and facilitated by the Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation, the Academy is also designed to be practical and hands-on. Faculty have the option of signing up for individual modules. The topics and schedule are as follows:

Tuesday August 29th

Module 1: 9:00 – 10:00 WELCOME & INTRODUCTION

Let’s get your quarter off to a great start by meeting other new faculty and learning more about the Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation and how we can help you succeed at UCI.

Module 2: 10:00 – 10:45 WHO WILL YOU BE TEACHING?

Learn about UCI undergraduates, their expectations, their diversity, and how that can positively influence your course design and teaching methods.

Break: 10:45- 11:00

Module 3: 11:00 – 12:00 DESIGNING YOUR COURSE

Creating a course requires more than just determining what content you will cover. This module will help you identify your student learning outcomes, create assignments and exams that align with these outcomes, and construct a syllabus.

DTEI PROVIDED LUNCHEON: 12:00 – 1:00

MODULE 4: 1:00 – 3:00 COURSE DESIGN CONTINUED + WORK TIME

This module will continue our conversation on best practices in course design and then faculty will be given time to work on their course designs with the opportunity for one-on-one assistance. Please bring any course materials you would like to work on or receive feedback on.

Wednesday August 30th

MODULE 5: 11:00 – 12:00 DESIGNING YOUR FIRST DAY OF CLASS

The first day of class is your opportunity to set the tone for your course, establish expectations, and start building a sense of community with the students. This module will help you prepare your first day by sharing evidence-based practices that motivate your students and models how you want the quarter to go.

MODULE 6: 1:30 – 2:15 STUDENT MOTIVATION AND ENGAGEMENT

What teaching methods have been proven to be effective? How might you motivate your students and get them more engaged in your course material? This module will demonstrate quick and easy strategies designed to make your class more active while increasing student learning.

Break: 2:15 – 2:30

MODULE 7: 2:30 – 3:30 INCLUSIVE TEACHING PRACTICES

What does it mean to have an inclusive classroom? How can your teaching better promote equity and inclusion? You will learn about an inclusive teaching method called Transparent Teaching that focuses on clear purposes, tasks, and criteria that allow for students from different backgrounds an equal opportunity for success in your course.

Thursday August 31st

MODULE 8: 9:00 – 10:30 CLASSROOM TECHNOLOGY

Come explore, test, and learn more about the technology available in UCI’s classrooms and lecture halls. We will address tools such as iClickers, lecture capture, and more. An expert will be on hand to demonstrate and answer individual questions.

BREAK: 10:30 – 10:45

MODULE 9: 10:45 – 12:00 ONLINE TEACHING

If you will be teaching any of you courses online (or hybrid), this module will help you effectively design your course space and discuss best practices in engaging your students. There will be time for questions as well as time for you to start designing your course.

LUNCH (ON OWN): 12:00 – 1:30

MODULE 10: 1:30 – 2:30 RESOURCES AND SUPPORT FOR TEACHING

What help is there once the quarter gets started? Where can you go to share your successes? Where can you find support for challenging courses? What programs are there for you to learn more about teaching and learning? Come learn more about the Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation and the many ways we can support you and engage you with other faculty at UCI. We also want to hear your ideas and what you need to be successful.
